ARISE Detroit!
ARISE Detroit! is a coalition of community groups working to uplift neighborhoods and promote civic engagement within the city of Detroit. Founded in 2006 by journalist Luther Keith, the organization gained prominence through its annual Neighborhoods Day, a citywide event celebrating community pride and volunteerism. The group aims to bridge divides between neighborhoods and foster collaboration to address citywide challenges, while also working to reshape external perceptions of Detroit[1].
History
Luther Keith launched ARISE Detroit! following a decades-long career as a news reporter, motivated by a desire to counter negative portrayals of Detroit in the media[2]. He observed that media coverage often focused on the city’s struggles, neglecting the positive aspects and the resilience of its communities. Keith sought to create an organization that would highlight the strengths of Detroit’s neighborhoods and empower residents to take an active role in their revitalization. The organization’s initial focus was on changing outsiders’ perceptions of the city, but quickly expanded to include direct community support and engagement.
The first annual Neighborhoods Day was established in 2007, quickly becoming a cornerstone of ARISE Detroit!’s activities[3]. This event provides a platform for neighborhoods to showcase their unique character and attract residents and visitors alike. It encourages community service and fosters a sense of collective pride. The event continued annually, growing in scope and participation, until Keith’s death in March 2025. Following his passing, Leslie Andrews, the chair of ARISE Detroit!, stepped in as interim CEO to continue his work, preparing for the 19th annual Neighborhoods Day on August 2[4].
