Abdullah Hammoud
Abdullah Hammoud (born March 9, 1990) is an American politician serving as the seventh mayor of Dearborn, Michigan. He is the first Arab American Muslim to hold the office.[1] Prior to his mayoral role, he represented the 15th District in the Michigan House of Representatives, where he focused on civil rights, public health, and economic development.[2]
Early Life and Education
Abdullah H. Hammoud was born and raised in Dearborn, Michigan, the son of working-class immigrant parents.[3] He received his primary and secondary education within the Dearborn Public Schools system. He later attended the University of Michigan, where he earned a Bachelor of Science degree, a Master of Business Administration (class of 2019) from the Ross School of Business, and a Master of Public Health.[4][5] His dual graduate training in business and public health reflects the priorities that have defined his career in public service.
Legislative Career
Hammoud's entry into public service began with his election to the Michigan House of Representatives, representing the 15th District. During his time in the state legislature, he championed initiatives focused on improving air quality, bolstering public health measures, enhancing educational opportunities, increasing access to healthcare, and fostering economic development across Michigan.[6] The Detroit Regional Chamber recognized him as a key figure in the region during this period, highlighting his broader commitment to Michigan's economic and civic development.[7]
Mayoral Career
First Term
In November 2021, Hammoud was elected Mayor of Dearborn, becoming the first Arab American Muslim to hold the office in a city that is home to one of the largest Arab American communities in the United States.[8] As mayor, Hammoud prioritized economic development, public health, and community engagement, drawing on the policy background he had developed during his time in the state legislature.[9] During his first term, he launched a public online feedback portal to gather resident input on city priorities and services, reflecting an emphasis on direct civic participation.[10]
Re-Election and Second Term
Hammoud won re-election as Mayor of Dearborn, defeating Republican challenger Nagi Almudhegi in a landslide victory. He was sworn in for his second term with a stated focus on housing and economic growth as the defining priorities of the new administration.[11]
