Cadillac Tower
The Cadillac Tower, originally known as the Barlum Tower, is a 40-story skyscraper located in Downtown Detroit, Michigan, and was, at the time of its completion, the tallest building in the city and the first outside of New York and Chicago to reach that height.[1] Standing at 176.2 meters (578 feet) to its antenna spire and 133.4 meters (438 feet) to its roof, the building remains a prominent feature of the Detroit skyline.[2]
History
The Cadillac Tower’s construction began in 1926 and was rapidly completed, officially opening on November 9, 1927.[3] The project was spearheaded and financed by John J. Barlum, president of the Barlum Realty Co. and the New Cadillac Development Co., who gave the building its original name.[4] Barlum’s wealth originated in his family’s meat-packing business, which he and his brothers, Thomas and Louis, leveraged into substantial real estate investments.[5] The building was designed by the architectural firm Bonnah & Chaffee.[6]
The speed of construction was remarkable for the time; the first piece of steel was put in place on May 9, 1927, and the entire steel structure was completed just weeks later.[7] Despite its early grandeur, the building’s interior has largely lost its original features and design elements over time. However, the exterior has remained remarkably well-preserved.[8] The Cadillac Tower was added to the U.S. National Register of Historic Places on July 27, 2005.[9]

The Cadillac Tower is situated at 65 Cadillac Square in Downtown Detroit, Michigan.[10] Its location places it directly adjacent to Campus Martius Park and overlooks Cadillac Square, making it a central landmark in the city’s core. The building’s coordinates are 42°19′55″N 83°02′42″W.[11]
A notable geographical feature related to the building’s design is the blank brick wall facing Campus Martius for the first 35 stories. This unusual characteristic is a result of the former presence of the Cadillac Square Building next door. When the Cadillac Tower was constructed, it was anticipated that the adjacent building would remain, eliminating the need for windows on that side.[12] This demonstrates how the building's design was influenced by its surrounding environment and the anticipated urban landscape at the time of its construction.
Architecture
The Cadillac Tower is designed in the Beaux-Arts style, evident in its symmetrical facade, ornate detailing, and use of classical architectural elements.[13] The exterior is primarily constructed from terra cotta and brick, with golden accents highlighting the top five floors, window arches, and roofline spires.[14] The windows themselves feature a Gothic arch, further contributing to the building's distinctive aesthetic.
The architectural style is also described as Neo-Gothic and incorporating elements of the Chicago School.[15] The building’s roofline is adorned with newels and cone-shaped spires on the corners, adding to its verticality and visual interest. The use of terra cotta, both in the white base and the golden accents, provides a rich texture and a sense of permanence to the structure. The building’s design reflects the architectural trends of the late 1920s, blending classical and modern elements to create a striking urban landmark.

The total floor area of the building is 31,773 square meters (342,000 square feet), spread across 40 floors, with two additional floors located below ground.[17]
