Founded in 1950 with the opening of the Detroit Arsenal Commandant’s Quarters, the Dearborn Historical Museum initially focused on preserving the military history of the region.[2] The Commandant’s Quarters, Dearborn’s oldest structure on its original location, had served as a military headquarters from 1833 to 1875, providing a tangible link to the area’s past. Over time, the museum’s scope expanded to encompass all aspects of Dearborn’s history, including its agricultural roots, industrial development, and the contributions of its diverse communities. The museum’s mission is to preserve uniquely Dearborn stories and interpret the evolution of the Dearborn area from human settlement to the present.[3]
The museum’s physical presence has grown over the years to include multiple sites. In addition to the Commandant’s Quarters, the museum manages the McFadden-Ross House, a former powder magazine of the US Army's Detroit Arsenal, and the Richard Gardner House, an 1830s home originally built in Dearborn Township.[4] These buildings provide unique settings for exhibits and programs, each offering a different perspective on Dearborn’s past. The Floyd & Mary Haight Archives, accessible by appointment, further enhance the museum’s research capabilities, providing access to a wealth of historical documents and photographs.

In 1926, the area known as Fordson, which is now part of Dearborn, had a population of 18,185 according to a state enumeration, though it was estimated to be around 33,000 at the time of consolidation.[12] This period of rapid growth was largely driven by the expansion of the Ford Motor Company and the accompanying industrial development. While the museum itself is a non-profit organization, it contributes to the local economy through tourism and educational programs.
