Ghesquiere Park

From Detroit Wiki

Ghesquiere Park, located in the City of Grosse Pointe Woods, Michigan, offers 32 acres of recreational space and serves as a central hub for community activities. Originally part of a larger 44.6-acre parcel purchased in 1945, the park has evolved from its initial conception alongside a planned municipal building to a versatile space featuring ball diamonds, pickleball courts, a disc golf course, and ample amenities for residents of all ages. [1]

History

The land encompassing Ghesquiere Park has a history intertwined with the development of Grosse Pointe Woods itself. In 1945, the site for the present Municipal Building and the park was acquired for $42,500. Three years later, a portion of the land, 12.6 acres then known as Mack Park and lying in Gratiot Township, was sold for $15,600. [2] The park is named in honor of Alois A. Ghesquiere, who served as President of the Village of Grosse Pointe Woods from 1939, when it transitioned from the Village of Lochmoor, until it officially became the City of Grosse Pointe Woods in 1950. [3]

Prior to the establishment of Ghesquiere Park as a municipal recreational area, community-led initiatives played a vital role in providing recreational facilities. The Grosse Pointe Woods Community Club, formed in 1938, spearheaded efforts to secure land for recreational purposes. Mrs. Hattie Chene donated a parcel of land for the creation of Chene-Trombly Park, and the Club's early activities included nursery schools, dancing classes, and supervised recreation. As recreational activities became recognized as a municipal responsibility, a city Recreation Commission took over, and the Community Club eventually concluded its long-term service. [4]
