The origins of Gleaners Community Food Bank trace back to 1976, when Gene Gonya, a Jesuit Brother, sought a way to distribute surplus produce from his family’s farm. Recognizing that existing feeding agencies lacked the capacity to store and handle large donations, particularly in the aftermath of civil unrest in Detroit, Gonya began donating food to the Sisters of Charity and eventually sold his possessions to purchase cattle for the Capuchins to provide fresh meat to those in need[1].
