History
The origins of the Karmanos Cancer Institute trace back to 1943, when it was founded as the Detroit Institute for Cancer Research.[2] This early focus on research laid the foundation for the institute’s future growth and development. In 1995, a strategic partnership led to the formation of Karmanos Cancer Institute (KCI), consolidating research efforts and expanding patient care services.[3] Prior to becoming the Karmanos Cancer Institute, the organization was known as the Cancer Center of Metropolitan Detroit, a designation awarded to only 51 cancer centers nationally.[4]
