Los Galanes is a Mexican restaurant in Detroit, Michigan, known for its authentic cuisine and the creation of the “Detroit botana,” a unique appetizer that has become a staple of local dining. History
Los Galanes began as a small taquería with modest beginnings, driven by a desire to share authentic Mexican food with the Detroit community[1]. The restaurant officially opened in 1993[2], but its roots trace back to the earlier culinary endeavors of Armando Galan, the founder. Prior to Los Galanes, Galan arrived in Detroit in the 1960s and initially worked as a busboy at Carl’s Chop House, quickly advancing to a waiter position due to his natural charisma[3]. He then opened a Coney Island in downtown Detroit, demonstrating his entrepreneurial spirit from an early stage.
Armando Galan’s impact extended beyond the restaurant itself. He is credited with popularizing and expanding the Cinco de Mayo festivities in Detroit, transforming the holiday into a significant event for local bars and restaurants[4]. Galan also hosted the Detroit Tigers after their 1984 World Series victory, famously locking the doors of his restaurant, Armando’s, to accommodate the team and celebrate privately. His children have continued his legacy by opening their own Mexican eateries throughout Metro Detroit, all of which feature the now-iconic Detroit botana[5]. Galan passed away in March 2020 in Puerto Vallarta, Mexico, at the age of 81[6].

He grew up in poverty in Big Wells, Texas, working on farm fields with his family, picking cotton from a young age[9].
