PJ's Lager House

From Detroit Wiki

PJ’s Lager House is a Detroit live music venue and bar with a history stretching back to the Prohibition era, originally operating as a furniture store to conceal its sale of alcohol. [1] Today, it continues to serve as a significant cultural hub, hosting both local and nationally touring musical acts, and offering a diverse range of events.

History

The building’s origins date back to the Prohibition period, when it functioned as a front for the illegal sale of alcohol disguised as a furniture store. [2] [3] Following the repeal of Prohibition with the 21st Amendment, the establishment transitioned into a beer garden, initially known as Doemer Beer Garden and later as Doemer Brothers Tavern. [4] It officially became The Lager House in 1965. [5] The venue has a history of serving as a gathering place for various groups, including teamsters and union autoworkers. [6]

Paul “PJ” Ryder purchased the Lager House in October 2007. [7] Ryder, a former record store owner who returned to Detroit after a 23-year stint in Ann Arbor, revitalized the venue. [8] He previously owned a record store for 15 years, from 1981 to 1996. [9] Ryder also worked in Detroit real estate for ten years before acquiring the Lager House. [10] In March 2017, Ryder celebrated his tenth anniversary of ownership. [11]
