Rivard Plaza

From Detroit Wiki

Rivard Plaza, initially named for Rivard Street, is a public space along the Detroit International Riverfront in Detroit, Michigan. The plaza underwent a name change in 2018 and serves as a key access point to the Detroit RiverWalk, a multi-use path transforming the city’s waterfront. It is a focal point for recreational activities and community events, contributing to the ongoing revitalization of Detroit’s riverfront area.

History

The Detroit Riverfront Conservancy has been central to the transformation of the Detroit Riverfront since 2003, working to create a publicly accessible and aesthetically pleasing space[1]. The initial phase of this revitalization included the opening of the first 3.5 miles of the RiverWalk on June 6, 2007[2]. Rivard Plaza was a component of this early development, providing a direct connection to the river and offering amenities for visitors.

In 2018, Rivard Plaza was renamed Cullen Plaza following a significant donation from Matt and Karen Cullen[3]. This financial contribution supported further improvements to the Riverfront and the opening of the Dequindre Cut Freight Yard, enhancing connectivity within the riverfront system. The Detroit Riverfront Conservancy continues to expand and improve the RiverWalk, with ongoing projects like the construction of Ralph C. Wilson, Jr. Park, which began in 2022 and is scheduled to open in 2025[4]. The Riverwalk has received recognition, being voted Best in the US by *USA Today* in 2021 and again in 2022[5].

Geography

Rivard Plaza is situated at the foot of Rivard Street, directly adjacent to the Detroit River. Its location provides immediate access to the river and views of Windsor, Ontario, across the Detroit River[6]. The plaza is an integral part of the larger Detroit International Riverfront, which stretches from the Ambassador Bridge to Belle Isle Park.

The RiverWalk, of which Cullen Plaza (formerly Rivard Plaza) is a part, now extends over eight miles, connecting Belle Isle to Michigan Central[7]. This continuous trail system facilitates pedestrian and bicycle traffic along the waterfront. Nearby landmarks include Robert C. Valade Park, opened in 2019, and the Dennis Archer Greenway, opened in 2020[8]. The Dequindre Cut, a pathway connecting the Riverfront to Eastern Market, also intersects with the RiverWalk near the plaza[9].

Attractions

Rivard Plaza, now Cullen Plaza, features covered seating areas, providing shelter for visitors[10]. A prominent attraction within the plaza is a carousel, offering entertainment for families and individuals. The plaza serves as a gathering place for community events and provides access to the broader amenities of the Detroit RiverWalk.

The surrounding Riverfront area offers a variety of attractions. Robert C. Valade Park includes performance spaces and recreational areas[11]. The Detroit RiverWalk itself provides opportunities for walking, biking, and enjoying views of the river. The planned Ralph C. Wilson, Jr. Park, currently under construction, will add 22 acres of parkland to the West Riverfront, featuring a play garden and other amenities[12]. The Dequindre Cut provides access to Eastern Market, a historic public market.

Getting There

Access to Rivard Plaza (Cullen Plaza) is facilitated by several transportation options. The plaza is accessible by car, with parking available in nearby lots. Public transportation options include the Detroit Department of Transportation (DDOT) bus system, with several routes serving the Riverfront area. Bicycle access is encouraged, with bike lanes and racks available along the RiverWalk.

The Dequindre Cut provides a dedicated pathway for pedestrians and cyclists connecting the Riverfront to Eastern Market and other parts of the city[13]. The RiverWalk’s continuous trail system allows for easy navigation between different points along the waterfront. The proximity to major roadways and public transportation hubs makes the plaza a convenient destination for both residents and visitors.
