TechTown Innovation Campus is a 20-year-old innovation district in Detroit, Michigan, initially focused on supporting technology startups but now encompassing a diverse range of small businesses and entrepreneurs. TechTown was established in 2000 as a joint venture between Wayne State University, Henry Ford Health System, and General Motors, with the intention of fostering innovation and entrepreneurship. It was formally incorporated as a nonprofit organization four years later, in 2004. [2] Initially, the focus was primarily on supporting tech startups affiliated with Wayne State University, serving as an incubator for emerging technologies. However, the scope of TechTown quickly broadened to include all types of small businesses and entrepreneurs seeking to establish or grow their ventures in Detroit. [3]
Over the past two decades, TechTown has continued to evolve, adapting to the changing needs of the Detroit business community. It has expanded its programs and services to provide resources such as business acceleration, mentorship, access to capital, and workspace solutions. As of February 2025, TechTown has supported over 6,000 businesses in Detroit and Wayne County, contributing to the creation of more than 2,200 jobs. TechTown is physically centered around a landmark 1927 Albert Kahn building located on the north side of the Wayne State University campus.
