Vivio's

From Detroit Wiki

Vivio's is a longstanding tavern and restaurant located in Detroit’s Eastern Market neighborhood, known for its enduring presence and particularly its celebrated Bloody Marys. Operating continuously for decades, the establishment has evolved from a German community gathering place to a popular destination for locals and visitors alike, maintaining a reputation for food, service, and a lively atmosphere.

History

The building that currently houses Vivio’s has a history stretching back to 1892, when it was constructed as Meyfarth’s Hall. Originally, the structure served the surrounding German community with a bar on the first floor, a social hall on the second, and the Meyfarth family residence on the third floor. The northern half of the first floor has functioned continuously as a bar space since the building’s inception, establishing it as one of the oldest continuously operating bar spaces in Detroit[1]. In 1938, the main dining room was added to the building and operated as the Gypsy Tavern, advertising itself as the “House of Sandwiches”[2]. Fred Bradley initially ran the Gypsy Tavern, but he died in 1939, and Minnie took over operations until the business was acquired by Docker, then Quick's.

John and Shirley Vivio acquired the establishment in 1967, renaming it Vivio’s and introducing Italian cuisine[3]. The restaurant quickly became a local favorite, benefiting from its location near butcher shops, produce outlets, and the Stroh’s Brewery. A significant setback occurred in 1975 when a fire destroyed Vivio’s, but John and Shirley rebuilt the restaurant, reaffirming its place within the Eastern Market community[4]. Subsequent expansions included adding the dining room in the southern half of the first floor and, in the early 21st century, incorporating the entire second floor. In 2010, the Vivio family expanded their business beyond Detroit, opening Vivio’s Food & Spirits in Warren, Michigan[5]. Today, the family continues to operate both locations, upholding the traditions established by John and Shirley Vivio.

Geography

Vivio’s is situated within Detroit’s Eastern Market, a historic public market district. The Eastern Market area is bounded by Russell Street to the west, Gratiot Avenue to the north, Mack Avenue to the south, and I-75 to the east[6]. The original Vivio’s location resides in the historic Meyfarth’s Hall building, contributing to the architectural character of the neighborhood. The surrounding area is characterized by a mix of wholesale produce and flower businesses, retail shops, and other restaurants.

The location within Eastern Market provides Vivio’s with a unique setting, particularly during market days when the area is bustling with activity. The proximity to major roadways, including I-75 and Gratiot Avenue, provides accessibility for patrons traveling from various parts of the Detroit metropolitan area. The second Vivio’s location, Vivio’s Food & Spirits, is located in Warren, Michigan, at 12 Mile and Ryan roads, extending the restaurant's reach beyond the city limits[7].

Vivio’s has cultivated a reputation as a neighborhood gathering place, known for its welcoming atmosphere and generous portions. The restaurant’s longevity suggests a strong connection to the local community, serving generations of patrons. The establishment is particularly well-known for its Bloody Marys, described as “world famous”[8] and [9], and its mussels.
